Your HGTV Palace

Your HGTV Palace

Where I work, the TV is always on. One frequent channel is HGTV: the home remodeling show where starry-eyed buyers find their dream home. Sometimes these dream homes are sweet country cottages. More often, they are extravagant palaces on tropical islands or beachfront resorts.

None of this is wrong, but let’s be careful. I’ve sometimes seen part of the show and thought, ‘Wow, it would be nice to have a house like that!’ For some people, such possessions are a significant part of life.

The Bible warns against treasuring up possessions on earth, such that your heart drifts to this temporal realm. No, nothing is wrong with a nice home, but even the desire for these things can be spiritually dangerous.

Don’t put your dreams, hopes, and desires in this world. You may get a nice home, or you may not. As Jesus warned, moth and rust destroy these temporal treasures. Some people set their hopes on such palaces, and sometimes, they attain them. For those who are so occupied, they have their reward.

We are soldiers, seeking a higher prize. We will also attain a dream home, an extraterrestrial one. But even this palace is not really what we seek. What we seek is the Prince who prepares this home for us.
