The Pharisee and the Godly Man
The Pharisee loves the study of the Word of God; the godly man loves the God revealed through the Word.
The Pharisee enjoys the Word; the godly man goes further and trembles at the Word.
The Pharisee studies the Word in order to understand it; the godly man studies the Word in order to apply it.
The Pharisee is puffed up by the Word; the godly man is humbled by the Word.
The Pharisee delights to display his learning; the godly man delights to display his Master.
The Pharisee exhibits that he has been educated; the godly man exhibits that He has been with Christ.
The Pharisee advances himself as a teacher; the godly man humbles himself as a slave.
The Pharisee emphasizes the appearance; the godly man emphasizes the heart.
The Pharisee examines others; the godly man examines himself.
The Pharisee is incensed by sins against himself; the godly man is grieved by sins against God by himself.
The Pharisee responds to evil with law; the godly man responds to evil with grace.
